Painting is a pretty fun project, but it’s the kind of thing you only want to do once and with as few mistakes as possible since it’s a fairly permanent change. Sure you can paint over it in the future, but the point is you want to get it right the first time. It can be tempting to jump the gun and get started painting right away, but the most important part of painting a room is to prepare for it properly. Here are three tips for doing it if you’re not hiring interior painting services and doing the job yourself.

1. Fill Holes and Make Repairs
The first thing you need to do when you’re preparing a room for paint is to fill all of the cracks and holes and make any repairs. Industrial painters use spackle to fill in small nail holes and and gashes or scrapes in the wall. Repair any cracks in the wall or existing paint — a new coat of paint is not going to hide or fix cracks. Use a paintable caulk to fill in cracks and spaces around trim. This will make the trim look flush and new as well as cut down on drafts.

2. Sand and Clean
Commercial painting contractors all know that the most important part of a paint job is making sure that painting surfaces are smooth. Sand all the spots you spackled and make sure that all of the walls and trim don’t have any rough or protruding spots. After that, make sure to vacuum all of the sanding dust and wipe things down so you know you have a clean surface to work with.

3. Masking the Room
After you’ve filled and sanded any holes and cleaned your painting surfaces, it’s time to mask the room. Industrial painters use masking or painter’s tape to line the edges of window panes, floors, and ceilings to make sure that the edges are clean and sharp. Use the bottom of a spoon just along the edge to make sure no paint will bleed underneath it.
