When installing a deck or patio onto your house, you’ve got to take the sun into account. How are you going to protect yourself from its harsh rays so that you can get the full amount of enjoyment from your new addition? There are two main kinds of solar shades: awnings and canopies. Though each has its benefits, one might be more preferable for you over the other.

The biggest difference between the two is how they stand. Awnings are usually attached to a building’s exterior, and canopies are typically free standing. Awnings are used to cover an area that extends over a porch or a courtyard, while canopies cover a bigger area for people to gather and/or relax.

Canopies can be disassembled and stored away, while awnings can’t be because they’re connected to a home in a permanent way. They’re kept in place nearly all of the time, and can only be moved when it’s installed or replaced. Some might say that this gives them an advantage over awnings, since they’re mobile, but some homeowners may prefer to have the permanent option, eliminating the need for disassembly.

Because of their similarities, the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Someone may say “canopy” when they’re actually referring to awnings. This is especially true if an awning has supports on its other unconnected end. However, it’s important to know the difference when you’re shopping so that you don’t mistakenly get the wrong thing.

Though awnings and canopies do the same job, the main difference between them is their design. Canopies provide homeowners more options, but awnings are simpler. If you have any questions about the differences between awnings and canopies, feel free to ask in the comments! Learn more at this link.
